On Monday 28 June Pontrhydyrun cricket team was ‘re-something’ after an abeyance of several years, in a match against Upper Trosnant BC. After some discussion about the number of overs to be bowled, Trosnant won the toss and put Pont in to bat. The openers Anthony Hunt and Mark Tucker nudged the score along nicely before Anthony was caught pulling to midwicket. Len Davies was bowled by a fullish delivery, Mike Garwood was run out and Adrian Claughan caught in the covers. There was a solid middle order with Chris Garwood on 24 and Owen Morgan on 15. Mark Tucker top scored with 40.
Our total of 130 off 20 overs left Trosnant a mountain to climb. In fading light and increasing cloud cover their openers were stifled. Pont’s bowling was the epitome of line and length, giving the batsmen nothing to chew on. Apart from the 25 extras to the total, it was textbook stuff. Peter Gifford was on a hatrick at one point after he caught and bowled their opener and Adrian had held a catch. David Morgan who scored, commented on the lack of sledging at this point by Jon Thompson’s men. They showed the right way to play cricket. The middle order Trosnant batsmen failed to take on Pont’s bowling and the run rate went to more than 10 an over. Adrian Claughan bagged a wicket which left Trosnant an impossible task. Their overs up and our opponents had fallen short of the target. It was a very pleasant game and all who took part enjoyed the occasion. We were very grateful to Monkswood CC, especially Mark Tucker for letting us use their ground and Arthur Tucker for arranging the venue.
