Journey to Moldova – Noua
Just for a change I am writing this at 35000feet above the alps on the way to Rome where we have an hours wait for our flight to Belgrade and then a bus journey to Moldova-Noua where we will be helping to run an English Bible Club. This year Glenys Garwood, Deirdre Poulsom are joining Mary and I together with one of our granddaughters, Lydia who is awaiting the results of her degree finals in law and is a member of Malpas Road Evangelical Church in Newport. I am told we had a good journey from Newport I don’t remember anything till we reached Heathrow. We had tried to log in all the day when we were due to travel as the airline webpage said but despite numerous tries went around in circles as they were updating the site. However it was very easy to log in at the terminals in the airport. Dropping off our bags was easy except the conveyor system had broken down but it was soon repaired and the back log cleared. There was just time to drink the liquids we had brought with us before dumping the remainder and going through the security to the departure area. We were so early that there was little open not even the papers had arrived. Our flight to Rome was uneventful and we arrived early though there were no refreshments except a drink. We were starving by then but there was no time to get anything or even eat what we had brought with us. Even though we were transferring from one airline to another we had to pass through security when we had to dump any drinks we had left. Our onward journey was with JAT which we had not heard of until this year though they are celebrating their 84th anniversary which must make it one of the oldest airlines in the world. In contrast to our budget airlines they supplied us with light refreshments on both legs though from their conditions we hadn’t expected anything and had come prepared. The flight took us over Italy, the Adriatic Sea and Greece which was lovely. Our friends were waiting for us with the church minibus but it was a very long slow journey with many traffic jams due to roadworks. When we were stuck in one of Belgrade’s numerous traffic snarl ups our granddaughter, Lydia who is with us learnt that she had passed her LLB, law degree, with a two one. As we crossed into Romania we were greeted by rain with overcast skies and everything was green and dripping. They seemed to have been having our weather whilst we have had theirs. Tomorrow we will have a quiet day to recover and put the finishing touches to next week’s Bible Club Programme.

First Saturday of visit to Moldova-Noua, Romania
Saturday
Today has been a time of recovery from yesterday’s journey and we stayed in bed quite late for us. It was rather wet and quite cold for Romania at this time of the year so we needed sweaters. We had a leisurely breakfast and Glenys and Deirdre arrived about eleven o’clock. Vali collected the things we had sent out for the Bible Club from the church and we spent a few hours sorting things for each day. We identified the jobs to be completed and prepared a presentation for tomorrows morning service Mihaela translated the relevant parts into Romanian. The senior Pastor, John, arrived for some business with Vali and just in time to join us for lunch at the home of one of the church members. It was a family with whom we Mary and I had eaten on her first visit to Moldova-Noua and the husband had been a church elder and missed the excitement of smuggling Bibles across the border. He had been a Vet and kept a variety of birds of the eating and laying kind. We feasted on a chicken which he had killed in the morning and his wife had turned into soup and the main course. The meal was finished off with a dish from a mixture of raw beaten egg whites, sugar and fresh raspberries which was very nice but they do like everything very sweet. The meal was accompanied by cordials of elderflower and raspberry the recipes for which I have ready to make next year. After a short rest we have completed the presentations for Monday and quite a lot for the other days. Lydia has gone out for a walk with Mihaela and Glenys and Deirdre back to their hosts for their meal and bed. Tomorrow will not be too busy as there is a funeral in the church so no afternoon service.

Romania Report
After a very busy Sunday, we had a day off, or at least a change. With the end of the bible club, our hosts took us to one of the tourist spectacles of Romania, the oldest Railway system in the country, which climbs 1000ft. into the mountains. Before getting on the train – which had been introduced not only to provide transport for the coal, but also to convey the king and his retinue from a spar town in the hills, to a casino on the River Danube. In the spar town they constructed a theatre for the production of plays and opera to entertain the Royal visitors. The theatre is quite small but lavishly decorated and is still in perfect working order. Though not used for productions at present. The theatre also housed a museum of the events surrounding the Royal family and the work of the theatre.

Romania Report
Its now nine-fifteen and we have just returned from the evening service after an amazing day. We had a two hour session with the children for their Sunday School. The normal sunday school was augmented by most of the children, who came to the bible club. We spent the first half of the service practicing for the evening service and the second half took a further story from the life of Moses. The children responded well even though many of them did not normally attend.
After another extensive lunch we came back to Vali & Mihaelas, to finalise our presentation for the evening service. The children arrived on time accompanied by their parents and they sat in their places on the stage without any problems! The senior pastor was due to speak at another Church, but cancelled it and drove the 70km to attend the service. Pastor Sabin, conducted the service with the choir making a number of contributions.
